Free “Baby Girl” Preemie Baby Blanket Pattern – Using Granny Square Technique
Blankets and Afghans . Patterns - Baby Blankets and Afghans . Patterns - Blankets and Afghans . Patterns - Preemie ItemsThe Granny Square has been around in the crochet world for a long time. It comes and goes in popularity. When I first started crocheting, it was all the rage. In college, my roommate and I made dozens of single granny square afghans for ourselves, our family members and friends. Then the granny square kind of fell out of popularity. Well, it is back!! You see granny square projects all over right now, from home decor pieces to personal accessories.
The granny square is a great technique. It can be very simple or used as part of a very complex design. Squares themselves can be complicated or simple, too. The simple ones are great when you are starting out in the technique especially.
In this free pattern, the granny square doesn’t get much simpler than this. It makes a beautiful preemie afghan but as you can see in the directions, you can make it any size.
I made the pictured afghan using Big Twist “Value” yarn. I purchased it at my local Joann Store. It works up very quickly and really is quite pretty. Great for that preemie or, anyone else, for that matter.
Well, here is the pattern. If you would like an ad-free .pdf version please click below to purchase it in either my Etsy Shop or Ravelry Store.

This blanket is made by using the granny square crochet technique. Basically, this blanket is one large granny square. The blanket is then completed by working a lovely 3-round border around it.
****Important Sizing Note:*****
If you would like to make this blanket larger, just continue making more rounds until you reach the size that you would like. The directions for the border rounds would be the same.
Blanket Pattern
Round 1: Ch 4. Sl st into the first chain. (This creates a circle.)
Ch 3. (This counts as a dc.)

This creates the first round of the granny square – a 4-sided square. The Ch 2 in each round creates each corner.
There is no Ch 2 in the spaces between 3 dc clusters along the sides (between the corners).
Round 2: Work 2 dc in Ch 2-space below the Ch 3..

Skip the 3 dc cluster. Work 3 dc in the space. Skip next 3 dc cluster. Work 3 dc, Ch 2, 3 dc in the Ch-2 corner space.
Skip the 3 dc cluster. Work 3 dc in the space. Skip next 3 dc cluster. Work 3 dc, Ch 2, 3 dc in the Ch-2 corner space.
Skip the 3 dc cluster. Work 3 dc in the space. Skip next 3 dc cluster. Work 3 dc, Ch 2, 3 dc in the Ch-2 corner space.
Skip the 3 dc cluster. Work 3 dc in the space. Skip next 3 dc cluster. Work 3 dc, Ch 2 in the Ch-2 corner space. Sl st to top chain of the first Ch 3. Ch 3. (This counts as a dc.). Turn.
