WHY DO I LOVE DISHCLOTH PATTERNS?

Dishcloths are such a great project for many reasons.

  •  They are quick and easy projects.
  •  Dishcloths make great gifts.
  •  Dishcloths are great projects to work on to practice new crochet stitches that can be used for future projects.
  •  Dishcloths are also Washcloths…..usable as part of spa supplies.
  •  Dishcloths are just fun to make!

Now, let’s get right to the pattern.

Yarn

The yarn that I chose for this pattern is Lily “Sugar ‘n Cream” yarn.  It is 100% cotton yarn.  It is a #4 weight yarn and comes in so many colors….solids and ombres.  Of course, you can choose any cotton yarn that you wish.  I would definitely recommend cotton yarn.  It is washable and dryable and absorbent.  Any other fiber content yarn really won’t be a satisfactory choice.

Skill Level:  Beginner

Size:  One Size  (10 inches x 10 inches)

Materials Needed:

  • Approximately 75 yards of Cotton Yarn.  I used Lily “Sugar ’n Cream” (100% cotton).  #4 weight yarn.
  • Crochet Hook:  Size “G” (4.00 mm)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry Needle  (Used for working in loose yarn ends.)

  • Finished Size:  Approximately 10 inches x 10 inches
  • This pattern uses US Crochet Terminology

Stitches Used in the Pattern:

–  ch = chain

–  sk = skip

–  ch-2 sp = chain 2 space

–  sl st = slip stitch

–  sc = single crochet

–  dc = double crochet

Special Stitches:

Shell Stitch (Shell):  (Sc, ch 2, 4 dc) in same ch or st; shell made

Gauge:  4 inch square = 5.5 clusters by 6.5 rows

To create this stitch, you must have a Chain Multiple of 4 + 2.

PATTERN

Chain 34 chains.

Row 1:  Work shell in the 2nd ch from the hook; *sk next 3 chs, work shell in next ch; repeat from * across to the last 4 ch; sk next 3 ch, sc in the last ch; ch 3, turn.  (30 st)

Row 2:  2 dc in the first sc; *work shell in the next ch-2 sp; repeat from * across to the last ch-2 sp; sc in the last ch-2 sp; ch 3, turn.  (Amazingly – counting the ch 3, 53 st)

Row 3: Work 2 dc in the first sc; *work shell in the next ch-2 sp; repeat from * across to the last ch-2 sp; sc in the last ch-2 sp; ch 3, turn.  (53 st)

Repeat Row 3 for the pattern until the dishcloth measures approximately

9.75 inches long.

Last Row of the Dishcloth:  *Skip first 2 stitches, work 1 sc in each of the next 3 stitches, work 1 sc in the ch-2 space.*. Repeat from * to end of the row.  Ch 1.  (30 st)

Fasten off and work in all loose ends.

Finished!   I think you’ll want to make more “Fancy ZigZag Dishcloths” for yourself and for gifts!
