Isn’t this colorful and happy project so cute? The pattern for this project is being offered here for free and the ad-free version of the pattern is available on Ravelry. The cost for the pattern on Ravelry is $3.00, but it is FREE for one day, April 24th, if you use the Coupon Code: 60MinuteProject. The Coupon Code will only work on April 24th. After the 24th the pattern will still be available for FREE here in this post but the Ravelry ad-free pattern will be available for the $3.00 price.
I hope you like this little project. It is part of the Blog Hop because it can be made using left-over yarn and can be made in approximaely 1 hour. It could take longer if you take breaks but either way it uses left-over yarn and goes together really quickly!
Inspiration
I came up with this project for a couple of reasons. First, I wanted to create a pattern that could be made of scrap yarn. Second, the project can be made quite quickly. And, third, you may have heard of May Baskets that have traditionally been made and filled with candies, trinkets, flowers, etc. and then hung on friends’ and families’ door knobs on May Day which is May 1st.
You may have never heard of this traditional practice, but there once was a time when it was practiced by quite a few communities, and some people still do this. I think it is such a fun thing to do and, as a child, I used to participate in this with my family and friends in our neighborhood. It was so much fun and it really brings back fond memories. The baskets are such a cute idea and when I thought about them I started coming up with a new idea to add to, or replace, the basket. And, that is the “Springtime Door Banner”.
Wouldn’t it be fun to surprise your family and friends with these happy and colorful banners hanging on their door? You could even attach candy or trinkets to each one, if you wanted to.
Other uses would be to use them on a wall or on cupboard handles and knobs in and around the house.
There are lots of fun and creative ideas for their use!
Yarn
Of course, this project could be made of any kind of yarn but I chose a 100% cotton yarn because it tends to hold it’s shape a little better when the banner is hanging. The yarn comes in solids and ombres and so many colors so it is a great choice for this happy project.
If you are ready to create your own “Springtime Door Banner” here is the pattern! Enjoy!!

Here is “The Springtime Door Banner” pattern! It is a quick and easy pattern so that you can whip up a lovely project in a very short time with leftover yarn. Perfect to use yourself as decor in your own home, as an addition to a hostess gift basket or as a wonderfully decorative banner for doors of your friends and family.
You may be familiar with the concept of the “May Basket” placed on doors on May Day, May 1st. Wouldn’t this be a cute replacement or addition to that lovely Spring tradition?

Skill Level: Beginner
Size: One Size (5 inches x 7.5 inches)
** I recommend reading through the entire pattern before you begin. That way you can have a good idea of what is included and you won’t run into any surprises while you are working on the project!**
Materials Needed:
- Approximately 50 yards of Cotton Yarn. I used Lily “Sugar ’n Cream” (100% cotton). #4 weight yarn. (For the body of the banner.)
- Small amounts of various colors of cotton yarn for the center and petals of each flower.
- Crochet Hook: Size “H” (5.00 mm) (Used for both the banner and the flowers.)
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle (Used for working in loose yarn ends and sewing on flowers.)
- Glue Gun and glue sticks (Optional – flowers can be sewn on or glued)
- 1/4-inch Satin Ribbon. (I used approximately 24 inches for each banner). The type and length of ribbon is up to you.
Finished Size:
- Banner: Approximately 5 inches wide x 7.5 inches long
- Flower: Approximately 3.25 inches in diameter
- This pattern uses US Crochet Terminology
Stitches Used in the Pattern:
– ch – chain
– sc – single crochet
– dc – double crochet
– sl st – slip stitch
– sk = skip
Gauge: 4 inch square = 12 sc stitches across x 14 rows down
Springtime Door Banner Pattern
Chain 15 chains.
(If you would like a larger or smaller banner, just make the number of chains that get the width that you would like…..any number of chains works!)
Row 1: In the 2nd chain from the hook work a sc. Sc in each chain across. Ch 1. Turn. (14 st)
Row 2: Work a sc in each stitch across the row. Ch 1. Turn. (14 st)
Row 3 – 24: Repeat Row 2. But at the end of Row 24, instead of Ch 1, do a Ch 3. (14 st)
Row 25: Work a dc in each stitch across the row. Ch 1. This row will be the top of the banner. (14 st)
Fasten off.
Work in ends at the beginning and end of the project.
Ribbon Hanger
To attach the ribbon, take one end of the ribbon and, with the dc row at the top, pull the end of the ribbon from the back to the front in the opening next to the Ch 3. Then weave the ribbon over and under the double crochets across the row. You can weave the ribbon as you like. I chose to go Under the first st, Over 2 dc, Under 4 dc, Over 1 dc, Under 4 dc, Over 2 dc and Under the last dc. (Refer to the photographs.)
Once you have the ribbon woven through the dc row, even out the ribbon so that both sides are even. Tie in a bow.
Now it’s time to make and attach the flowers!!
Flower Pattern
(These directions are for one flower.) Make as many as you like: 1, 2 or 3!
Center of the Flower:
– Using the Magic Circle technique, and yellow yarn (you can choose whatever color you would like.). Ch 3. Then work 11 dc in the circle. Pull end of yarn tightly to form the center. Sl st into the top of the Ch 3. Ch 1. Fasten off.
Flower Petals
(See photos below for each step of adding petals to the center of the flower.)
– Using a second color of yarn, attach the yarn to the stitch where you fastened off the flower center. Ch 3. Skip 1 stitch on the center and sl st into the next stitch. Ch 3, skip 1 stitch and sl st in the next stitch. Continue doing this around the entire center. When you are done you will have done this 6 times. Do the last slip stitch in the stitch where you added the new color of yarn.
– You will notice that you now have the center and a row of chains that form 6 spaces going around that flower center.
– Sl st in the first space. Ch 2. Work 3 dc in the same space. Ch 2. Sl st in the same space. (You have now completed the first petal.)
– For the next petal, sl st in the next space. Ch 2. Work 3 dc in the same space. Ch 2. Sl st in the same space. (The second petal is now complete.)
– Repeat the directions for Petal 2 four more times. At that point you will have made all 6 petals.
– To finish, sl st in the same spot where you started the new yarn for the first petal. (Place this sl st in the space between the 6th and 1st petals.). Ch 1. Fasten off leaving a long tail of yarn to sew the flower on to the banner.
Weave in all loose ends except long tail for sewing. If using hot glue to attach, weave in all ends.
Make more flowers to attach to your banner.
Attaching Flowers: Sewing
– Using the long tail of yarn and your tapestry needle, sew your flower by placing it where you want it on the banner. Start by coming up from back of banner next to one of the sl st between petals. Stitch over that slip stitch and go back down with needle to back of the banner. Now come up next to the next slip stitch between petals and do the same thing. Continue stitching like this until you have stitch over all slip stitches. Fasten off the yarn. You can come back up into the center of the flower and invisibly hide the yarn within that center. Cut yarn.
Attach all flowers in the same way.
Attaching Flowers: Hot Glue
This method will create a more flat look to your flowers. If you use hot glue, put glue on the back of the flower at the center and at various spots on the back of the petals. You don’t need huge amounts of glue. When you have the glue on the flower, place it on your banner and press down with your hand. Be sure you have it exactly where you want it. It’s not easy to pick up and remove.
Attach all flowers and you are finished! I think you’ll enjoy making these and will want to make more “Springtime Door Banners” for yourself and for gifts!! Have fun and Happy Spring!!!
Best Wishes and Stay Cozy!!!
