The Granny Square has been around in the crochet world for a long time.  It comes and goes in popularity.  When I first started crocheting, it was all the rage.  In college, my roommate and I made dozens of single granny square afghans for ourselves, our family members and friends.  Then the granny square kind of fell out of popularity.  Well, it is back!!  You see granny square projects all over right now, from home decor pieces to personal accessories.  <\/p>\n

The granny square is a great technique.  It can be very simple or used as part of a very complex design.  Squares themselves can be complicated or simple, too.  The simple ones are great when you are starting out in the technique especially.<\/p>\n

In this free pattern, the granny square doesn’t get much simpler than this.  It makes a beautiful preemie afghan but as you can see in the directions, you can make it any size.<\/p>\n

I made the pictured afghan using Big Twist “Value” yarn.  I purchased it at my local Joann Store.  It works up very quickly and really is quite pretty.  Great for that preemie or, anyone else, for that matter.<\/p>\n

Materials Needed: <\/b><\/p>\n

Big Twist \u201cValue\u201d 100% acrylic yarn, (#4 weight) <\/p>\n

Each skein is 6 oz.\/380 yards (170 g\/(347 m). <\/p>\n

Machine wash, gentle, on warm.  <\/span>Tumble dry on low.  <\/span>Do not over dry.<\/p>\n
