Halloween Granny Square Pattern! Get Your Coupon Code Now!
News
Fall is here and Halloween is just around the corner. I love this season and all the holidays. I also like the leaves changing, temperatures falling, fall festivals and snuggling in to sit in front of a beautiful fire or watch a scary Halloween movie.
With all of that in mind, I was inspired to make this fun, colorful and snuggly Halloween Granny Throw. It’s perfect for adults and kids alike and I think you will want to make one or more for yourself and your family.
It makes use of the new-again “Granny Square” technique and it is really fun and pretty easy to make.
Yarn
The yarn that I chose for my blanket was Hobby Lobby “I Love This Cotton” in four different colors that I thought were very much Halloween-y. (I do plan to make this pattern in Christmas colors later, too.)
I am including the pattern here but if you would like the ad-free .pdf file with more pictures, please click on the buttons below to go to either my Ravelry Store or my Etsy Shop.

Throw Pattern
“Halloween Granny” Pattern
Basic Granny Square. (make 16)
– 6 of Color A
– 5 of Color B
– 5 of Color C
Directions for Making 1 Granny Square
Round 1: Ch 4. Sl st into the first chain. (This creates a circle.)
Ch 3. (This counts as a dc.)
Work 2 dc in the circle. Ch 2. Work 3 dc in circle, Ch 2. Work 3 dc in the circle. Ch 2. Work 3 dc in the circle. Ch 2. Sl st in the top chain of the first Ch 3. Ch 3. (This counts as a dc.). Turn.
This creates the first round of the granny square – a 4-sided square. The Ch 2 in each round creates each corner.
There is no Ch 2 in the spaces between 3 dc clusters along the sides (between the corners).
Round 2: Work 2 dc in Ch 2-space below the Ch 3..
Skip to next Ch-2 corner space. Work 3 dc, Ch 2, 3 dc in the corner space.
Skip to next Ch-2 corner space. Work 3 dc, Ch 2, 3 dc in that corner space.
Skip to next Ch-2 corner space. Work 3 dc, Ch 2, 3 dc in that corner space.
Skip to 1st Ch-2 corner space (the one you started with). Work 3 dc, Ch 2. Sl st. to top ch of the first Ch 3. Ch 3. (This counts as a dc.). Turn.
Round 3: Work 2 dc in the Ch-2 corner space. Skip the 3 dc cluster as you go down the first side. Work 3 dc in the space. Skip next 3 dc cluster. Work 3 dc, Ch 2, 3 dc in the Ch-2 corner space.
Skip the 3 dc cluster. Work 3 dc in the space. Skip next 3 dc cluster. Work 3 dc, Ch 2, 3 dc in the Ch-2 corner space.
Skip the 3 dc cluster.
Work 3 dc in the space. Skip next 3 dc cluster. Work 3 dc, Ch 2 in the Ch-2 corner space. Sl st to top chain of the first Ch 3. Ch 3. (This counts as a dc.). Turn.
Rounds 4 – 7: Keep repeating this pattern where 3-dc clusters are worked in each space along each side and 3 dc, Ch 2, 3 dc are worked in each corner Ch-2 space.
You should end with 7 rounds and a perfectly square granny square. (8.5 inches x 8.5 inches)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Remember:
For this throw, you should make 6 granny squares using Color A, 5 granny squares of Color B and 5 granny squares of Color C.
When all squares are completed, lay them out in the pattern that you would like on a large table or on the floor. I made mine like this:
Row 1: (Top Row) Color A – Color B – Color C – Color A
Row 2: Color B – Color C – Color A – Color B
Row 3: Color C – Color A – Color B – Color C
Row 4: Color A – Color B – Color C – Color A
To connect each square to the next and each row to the next, use a single crochet and Black yarn.
Starting with the left side of Row 1, take Color A square and Color B square and place them together lining up one side and connect together using single crochet.
The single crochets of each square should line up with each other. Insert the hook into one side of the single crochet on one square and into one side of the single crochet on the other square and complete the single crochet. Do this all the way down the side of the squares.
When you have connected those two squares, fasten off. Then connect Color B square with Color C square. Fasten off. Then connect Color C square with Color D square. Fasten off. Row 1 connections are done.
Row 2 is connected in the same way, starting at the left side.
Row 3 is connected in the same way, starting at the left side.
Row 4 is connected in the same way, starting at the left side.
Next, lay each row out on a table or other flat surface.
Using single crochet again, connect Row 1 to Row 2. You will be matching the bottom of Row 1 with the top of Row 2.
Connect Row 2 to Row 3. You will be matching the bottom of Row 2 with the top of Row 3.
Connect Row 3 to Row 4. You will be matching the bottom of Row 3 with the top of Row 4.
As you single crochet across the row, be sure to match up the single crochet connections that connect each individual square to the other.
At this point, you will have one large square that includes all individual granny squares connected together. Hooray!!!
Border:
Round 1: Start in any corner. You can choose any of the four corners. Using Black yarn, attach it to the corner and work 2 single crochets. Work a single crochet in each single crochet along the first side of the square. Work 3 single crochets in the second corner. Work a single crochet in each single crochet along the second side. Work 3 single crochet in the third corner. Work a single crochet in each single crochet along the third side. Work 3 single crochets in the fourth corner. Work a single crochet in each single crochet along the last (fourth) side. Work 1 single crochet in the last (first) corner. Slip stitch in the first single crochet. Ch 2.
Round 2: Work 2 half double crochets in the same space as the Ch 2. Work a half double crochet in each single crochet along the first side of the square. Work 3 half double crochets in the second corner. Work a half double crochet in each single crochet along the second side. Work 3 half double crochet in the third corner. Work a half double crochet in each single crochet along the third side. Work 3 half double crochets in the fourth corner. Work a half double crochet in each single crochet along the last (fourth) side. Work 1 half double crochet in the last (first) corner. Slip stitch in top of the first half double crochet. Ch 1.
Round 3: Work 2 single crochets in the same space as the Ch 1. Work a single crochet in each half double crochet along the first side of the square. Work 3 single crochets in the second corner. Work a single crochet in each half double crochet along the second side. Work 3 single crochet in the third corner. Work a single crochet in each half double crochet along the third side. Work 3 single crochets in the fourth corner. Work a single crochet in each half double crochet along the last (fourth) side. Work 1 single crochet in the last (first) corner. Slip stitch in the first single crochet.
Round 4: *Ch 3, sl st in the next sc.*. Repeat from * to * all the way around the throw.
Fasten off and weave in all ends.
