Messy Bun (Ponytail) Hat Pattern Now Available!

Patterns - Hats - Adult Women

Of course, everyone has been developing patterns for a messy bun hat, and I now have one available! It isn’t real elaborate.  Actually, it is quite basic but looks quite nice!  It uses only single and half double crochets.  Hope you like it!

(I just wanted to let you know that this post contains “affiliate links”.  That means that if you click through and make a purchase from any of those links, I will get a small percentage of the sale at no additional cost to you.  Thank you so much for your continued support!  You can check my Disclosure page for more information.)

Skill Level:  Easy
Size:  Adult
Materials Needed:

–  1 skein Aran weight (#4) yarn  (I used Lion Brand “Vanna’s Choice” for this hat.)
–  Crochet Hook,  Size G/4.25 mm for the ribbing; Size H/5.00 mm for the rest of the hat
–  Elastic ponytail band
–  1 Yarn Needle  (Used for working in loose yarn ends

Gauge:  8 hdc = 3 inches and 7 rows = 3 inches

***NOTE!!!  I tend to crochet loosely.  If you find that you crochet tighter, you may want to switch to a larger hook to get the correct size!

Hat Pattern:
(This hat is made from the bottom up, starting with the ribbing.)

Ribbing:  (Using G Hook)

–  Chain 7.
Row 1:  In second chain from the hook, single crochet.  Continue single crochets to end of row.  (6 sc total.). Ch 1.  Turn.
Row 2:  Single crochet in back loop only in each stitch across.  (6 sc total).   (By crocheting in the back loop only you will create the ribbing effect.). Ch 1.  Turn.
Row 3 -50:  Repeat Row 2.
Ribbing should be approximate 19 inches long.
Fold ribbing strip in half.  Using a single crochet stitch, stitch short ends of ribbing together to form a circle.  These stitches form the seam.  Ch 1.  Turn right side out so that seam is on inside.

Body of Hat:  (Using H Hook)

Round 1:  Single crochet all around the top of the ribbing.  Do this by making a single crochet in the end of each ribbing row.  Total:  50 single crochet stitches.  When you reach the end of the round, slip stitch into the top of the first single crochet.  Ch 1.
Round 2:  Half double crochet in first stitch and all the way around.  (Total:  50 cdc.)  Ch 1.

Round 3 – 13:  Repeat Round 2.
Round 14:  Single crochet in first 2 stitch, skip 1 stitch, *single crochet in next 2 stitches, skip next stitch*.  Repeat from * to * all the way around.  Ch 1.
Round 15:  Repeat Round 14.

Round 16:  (Final Round)  Single crochet around the elastic ponytail band and into each of the remaining single crochets. Ch 1.  Cut yarn leaving approximately 7 – 8 inches.  Pull yarn through stitch to secure.  Work in any loose ends.

Enjoy your fun new messy bun hat!
