Fasten off.

Earflap #2
(Use Silver Grey)

****To determine placement of the second earflap, with right side out, fold hat so that first earflap is folded in half and you are looking at the front of the hat.  The first earflap will be on the left as you look at the hat.  From the fold on the right side of the flattened hat, count 5 stitches to the left (toward the center front of the hat).  Place a stitch marker in that stitch.  Attach yarn to that stitch.  Working on right side of hat and following directions for Earflap #1, complete Earflap #2.
Do Not Fasten off yarn.  Continue on to Edging for All Around Hat and Both Earflaps.

Edging for All Around Hat and Earflaps:
(Use Terracotta)

Row 12:   (Use Terracotta)  Sc in each stitch all the way around the hat.  Ch 1.  Fasten off.  Weave in all loose ends on hat.

Braids:
(Use Radiant Yellow or a combination of two colors that you choose)

Braid #1

1.     If using one color, cut 12 24-inch lengths of yarn.
2.     Place these together in one group.  (12 lengths)
3.     If using two colors, cut 6 24-inch lengths of yarn in each color.
4.     Place these together in one group.  (12 lengths)
5.     Fold the group in half.
6.     With the right side of the earflap facing you and using your crochet hook,  pull the folded end of the yarn group through the Ch 2 space in the last row of sc at the bottom of the earflap.  Pull it from right side to wrong side.  Put the other end of the yarn group through the loop and pull tightly.  The group of yarns is now attached to the earflap.
7.     Because you folded the 12 yarn lengths in half, you now have 24 yarns to use to make your braid.  Divide the 24 into 3 groups of 8.  (You can decide how to divide up the colors.  You can just leave them random or divide as you wish.)  Braid the yarn until you get to 2 ½ inches from the end of the yarn.
8.     Cut another length of yarn (in either color) and wrap 3 times around the braid.  Pull tight and knot twice to hold braid from unraveling.  Trim bottom of braid leaving approximately 2 inches of unbraided yarn below the knot.

Braid #2
Repeat directions used to make Braid #1.

Fasten off yarn and weave in loose ends.

Claw Ties:
(These can be substituted for the braids…..for that “real” turkey look!}

Materials Needed:
–  Small amount of Aran weight (#4) yarn  (Radiant Orange or Radiant Yellow)   (I used Lion Brand “Vanna’s Choice Solids” for my claw ties.  You can use either orange or yellow….. your choice.)
–  Crochet Hook,  Size H/5.00 mm  (for all sizes)
–  Yarn Needle  (Used for working in loose yarn ends and sewing Claw Ties to hat.)

Claw #1
Chain 30.  Slip stitch in second chain from the hook.  Slip stitch in next 4 ch.  (This forms first claw.)  Ch 6.  Slip stitch in next 5 chains.  (This forms second claw.)  Slip stitch in chain just above first claw.  Ch 6.  Slip stitch in next 5 chains.  (This forms third claw.)  Slip stitch in chain just above first claw.  Then slip stitch in each chain to end of row of chains, ending where your chain started.

Claw #2
Repeat same as Claw #1.

Attach one claw to bottom of each earflap.  Work in loose ends.

Earflap #2
(Use Color A)
****To determine placement of the second earflap, with right side out, fold hat so that first earflap is folded in half and you are looking at the front of the hat.

Row 12:   (Use Color A)  Sc in each stitch all the way around the hat.  Ch 1.  Fasten off.  Weave in all loose ends on hat.

Braids:

Braid #1
Choose yarns in one or both of the two colors used in the hat.  In my example, I have used Color A only.

Claw Ties:
(These can be substituted for the braids…..for that “real” turkey look!}

2.     Place these together in one group.  (12 lengths)
3.     If using two colors, cut 6 32-inch lengths of yarn in each color.

Claw Ties:
(These can be substituted for the braids…..for that “real” turkey look!}

Using the large yarn needle, work in the beginning end of the yarn.

Eye #2
Make exactly as Eye #1.

Refer to the picture of the hat for placement of the eyes.  Using a yarn needle, sew to front of hat.  Work yarn ends in.  Again referring to picture, place each button and sew in place using smaller needle that will fit through the holes in the button, and either a 12-inch length of black yarn (if you would like to match the button eyes) or white or a color to match the hat itself (if you would like a different look).  Fasten off and work the ends of the yarn into the hat.

Fasten off.

Earflap #2
(Use Color A)
****To determine placement of the second earflap, with right side out, fold hat so that first earflap is folded in half and you are looking at the front of the hat.

Row 12:   (Use Color A)  Sc in each stitch all the way around the hat.  Ch 1.  Fasten off.  Weave in all loose ends on hat.

Braids:

Braid #1
Choose yarns in one or both of the two colors used in the hat.  In my example, I have used Color A only.

1.     If using one color, cut 12 32-inch lengths of yarn.
2.     Place these together in one group.  (12 lengths)
3.     If using two colors, cut 6 32-inch lengths of yarn in each color.

Claw Ties:
(These can be substituted for the braids…..for that “real” turkey look!}

(24 dc)
Using the large yarn needle, work in the beginning end of the yarn.

Eye #2
Make exactly as Eye #1.

Refer to the picture of the hat for placement of the eyes.  Using a yarn needle, sew to front of hat.  Work yarn ends in.  Again referring to picture, place each button and sew in place using smaller needle that will fit through the holes in the button, and either a 12-inch length of black yarn (if you would like to match the button eyes) or white or a color to match the hat itself (if you would like a different look).  Fasten off and work the ends of the yarn into the hat.

Approximately, how much yarn would be needed for an adult sized hat? I know this is a pretty old post, but I thought I would try 🙂

Thank you for sharing your pattern! I am trying to make the 3-10 year old size for my 8 year old sister, but it looks quite shallow. Do you have any pictures of how well they fit on a child's head?

  • Christine Longe has written: 11/03/2016 at 6:56 pm Reply

Hi! 16 rows work pretty well for the 3 – 6 year olds, but if you are making it for an older child I would increase the rows to 18. In fact, I will write that into the pattern now. Please let me know how your hat turns out! Send a picture if you can! Greetings, Chris

Made the 'base' part of this hat last night for my 15 month old (size 12m-3y). Unfortunately it was WAY too small. I tend to crochet on the tighter size, but thought I'd be okay since the size range was up to 3 years. Will be restarting tonight with a larger hook and adding some more rows to the length and hopefully can get it to fit onto his head! I like to line mine with fleece too (we live in northern MN) so it needs to fit somewhat loosely! Cute pattern, will just need to modify it a bit to fit right. Thanks!

It's making a wonky seam. But frogging it all day! Over and over. Hate that seam. Any suggestions?

I’ve made a few of these hats and yours is the easiest to follow—thank you for sharing!
We have a Turkey Trot in Buffalo NY each year and these are perfect because it is the start of cold weather and the little feathers bounce along as we walk/run the race!
