** I crochet quite loosely and because of that my hat probably turns out larger than yours.  So that you have the size that you are looking for be sure to measure your crochet circle (top of the hat) when you complete the last increase row.  It should measure approximately 5 1/2 inches in diameter.  Please let me know if you have problems with this pattern by posting your questions and/or comments in the Comments section.  Thanks.**

( The ad-free version of this pattern is available in my Etsy Shop!!  Just click Here!!)

Skill Level:  Easy

Size:
1 – 3 Years

Materials Needed:

(Be sure that you use a #4 weight yarn.  If you don’t use Lion Brand “Vanna’s Choice Baby”, be sure the yarn is very close to the weight of “Vanna’s Choice Baby”.  If you use a lighter or chunkier yarn, the size will not turn out properly.)

Since I developed this pattern there have been changes at Lion Brand and I can no longer find the Vanna’s Choice Baby Yarn.  But when you click on the yarn, the link will go to Vanna’s Choice yarn where you can find colors that are similar to those listed here.

–  1 skein Aran weight (#4) yarn  (Color A – “Pink Poodle”   (I used Lion Brand “Vanna’s Choice Baby” for this hat.)
–  1 skein Aran weight (#4) yarn  (Color B – “Little Boy Blue”)  (I used Lion Brand “Vanna’s Choice Baby”)
–  1 skein Aran weight (#4) yarn  (Color C – “Sweet Pea”)  (I used Lion Brand “Vanna’s Choice Baby”)

–  Crochet Hook,  Size H/5.00 mm

–  Yarn Needle  (Used for working in loose yarn ends.)

 Important Tip:
A way to check your gauge for my pattern, I recommend that when you get to the end of the last INCREASE ROW, check that the circle that you’ve created for the top of the hat measures approximately 5 1/2 – 5 3/4  inches in diameter. Then continue on with the rest of the rows.

Earflap #2
(Use Color A – Pink)

****To determine placement of the second earflap, with right side out, fold hat so that first earflap is folded in half and you are looking at the front of the hat.The first earflap will be on the left as you look at the hat. From the fold on the right side of the flattened hat, count 6 stitches to the left (toward the center front of the hat).Place a stitch marker in that stitch.Attach yarn to that stitch.Working on right side of hat and following directions for Earflap #1, complete Earflap #2.

Do Not Fasten off yarn.  Continue on to Edging for All Around Hat and Both Earflaps.

Edging for All Around Hat and Earflaps:

(Use Color A – Pink) Sc in each stitch all the way around the hat.Ch 1. Fasten off.

(Use Color C – Green) Sc in each stitch all the way around the hat.Ch 1.Fasten off.Weave in all loose ends on hat.

Braids:

Braid #1
Choose yarns in one or two of the three colors used in the hat.In my example, I have used Color B – Blue and Color C – Green.

1.If using one color, cut 12 32-inch lengths of yarn.

2.Place these together in one group.(12 lengths)

3.If using two colors, cut 6 32-inch lengths of yarn in each color.

4.Place these together in one group.(12 lengths)

5.Fold the group in half.

6.With the right side of the earflap facing you and using your crochet hook, pull the folded end of the yarn group through the Ch 2 space in the last row of sc at the bottom of the earflap.Pull it from right side to wrong side.Put the other end of the yarn group through the loop and pull tightly. The group of yarns is now attached to the earflap.

7.Because you folded the 12 yarn lengths in half, you now have 24 yarns to use to make your braid.Divide the 24 into 3 groups of 8.(You can decide how to divide up the colors. You can just leave them random or divide as you wish.)Braid the yarn until you get to 2 ½ inches from the end of the yarn.

8.Cut another length of yarn (in either color) and wrap 3 times around the braid.Pull tight and knot twice to hold braid from unraveling.Trim bottom of braid leaving approximately 2 inches of unbraided yarn below the knot.

Braid #2
Repeat directions used to make Braid #1.

Fasten off yarn and weave in loose ends.

Flower

The flower used here, and attached to the right-hand side of the hat,  is called “Dahlia”.  It is found here on my blog.  The directions also include a video tutorial.  Click HERE for the directions.   Attach the flower as shown in the photo!

When you change colors, do you cut and sew in ends every time? Is there any other way?

  • Kim has written: 09/20/2014 at 3:55 pm Reply

Thank you so much for sharing your patterns! I think I can even understand them lol! Now just have to wait for cold snowy day to crochet! (Right around the corner in MN) again, thank you!

Thank you for sharing this adorable pattern! Making 2 for my granddaughter. Does it use a full skein of each color?

Christine – I am an experienced knitter learning crochet. I would like to make this hat for a four-year-old little girl. How can I adapt the pattern for that? More rounds? Any help you can give this knitter would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

please help! sat all night making this really cute hat , its soooooo tiny , it measures 38cm round and 11cm from crown down to top of flap , how big should it be for a 2 year old ? any help would be very much appreciated

  • Anonymous has written: 10/21/2014 at 6:04 pm Reply

Hi I had to add stitches and a row to make it fit my one year old. I started off with 12 DC and then added an extra expansion row. It is a little to big for her now but she will be able to wear it out 🙂

  • Alishia Tepper has written: 10/24/2014 at 6:55 am Reply

I thought the same thing. I spent 3 hrs making it and it looks no where near as big as the picture shown. Mine looks like it might fit 6-12 months not 12mon- 3yrs. I have a 2 year old and a 3 year old and I know for sure it wont fit my 3 year old. Try adding another couple of expansion layers

I spent 2 hrs creating this adorable hat (Thanks for the Free Pattern) But i hate to say but The sizing for this is wrong. This pattern is more so for a 6mon- 12mon child I have a 2 year old and a 3 year old and there is no way it would fit either one of them and it barely fits my daughters baby doll. You might want to make adjustments to the pattern so People know to add an extra layer or two before they go trying to make this and get sadly disappointed like I just did. and from the Comments i am not the only one having issues with the size.

  • Alishia Tepper has written: 10/24/2014 at 7:00 am Reply

I didn't cut my colors If you do it just the right way it gives you this cool braided look and I put my flower at the bottom of it and it gives it a little personality

  • Alishia Tepper has written: 10/24/2014 at 7:02 am Reply

No it doesn't but you might want to add and extra layer for expansion the pattern comes out a little small. Like this is more for a 6 mon- 12 month instead of a 12 mon – 3 year old

  • Christine Longe has written: 10/26/2014 at 4:24 pm Reply

    Hi Brooke,
No I don't cut and sew in the ends of each color. I start each color at the appropriate row mentioned in the pattern. When I am done with that row I don't cut. I just let it hang down behind my work. Then I add the new color, work the row and then let that hang behind the work. When you need a specific color, just pick it up and work the row. At any given time you will have all the colors hanging. When you get to the end of the hat, cut them all, leaving 8 or 9 inches of yarn and work them in separately. Hope that answers your question adequately.

    Hi Melissia,

No it doesn't take an entire skein of each color. I haven't measured out the amount but probably no more than half of the skein.

  • Christine Longe has written: 10/26/2014 at 4:28 pm Reply

    Hi Stephanie,

Yes you would have to add more rounds. I will try to work on the pattern for an older child and post it here in the near future.

    Hi Ladies,

I'm so sorry that the pattern is turning out so small for you. I appreciate how frustrating that is. I crochet quite loosely (and I will be adding that to the pattern). Because of that, mine probably turns out larger than yours. I am going to rework my pattern and make a few more hats from it and try to clear up any sizing issues. For the moment, though, I am going to change the Hook Size for this hat to an H Hook and as a way to check your gauge for my pattern, I recommend that when you get to the end of the last INCREASE ROW, check that the circle that you've created for the top of the hat measures 5 1/2 inches in diameter. Then continue on with the rest of the rows. Thanks so much for your comment and for your patience!

Thank you for your comments, Alishia. I am so sorry that the size has not worked out for you. I am adding the same reply here as I did in a previous post. I hope this is helpful and I will let all of you know when I have reworked the pattern.

I have reworked my pattern. Please note that there are changes, including the size of the hook. I welcome your comments and suggestions!

I have almost completed this hat for my three year old and it fits perfectly. Not too tight or too loose. Thank you for such a beautiful pattern and am anxious to complete it! 🙂

Thank you for clarifying! My hat was coming out small as well so I just added rows at the end and the was enough strecvh that it fit. Very cute hat!! The kiddos I've made it for look adorable!!

In round 5 of the hat pattern, how many total number of sc should there be? I am new to crochet and want to make sure I don't mess up the rest of the pattern… Thank you!

What are the actual color names that you used in that brand?

  • KarenP has written: 12/10/2014 at 4:21 pm Reply

Could this be made bigger… my girl would love this, but she's 10 years old.

  • Christine Longe has written: 01/19/2015 at 6:49 pm Reply

    Hi Katy,
I appreciate your patience for my reply. Things have been quite crazy at Lakeview Cottage for the last 2 or 3 months, but I think it might be settling down a little bit now! Anyway, the three colors of yarn that I used for this hat are part of the LionBrand Vanna's Choice Baby Yarn Collection. The colors from that collection are: Sweet Pea, Little Boy Blue and Pink Poodle. Thank you for asking!

    Hi Karen,
I have now added the larger size to this pattern. Take a look! So now two sizes are available, 1 – 3 Years, and 3 – 10 Years! Hope you like it! Let me know!

    Chris

    Hi Stephanie,
A new larger size is now available here on the page. Hope you like it!

    Hi Hally,
There should be a total of 56 stitches in Row 5. Thanks for asking

Do you have a pattern for teens/adults?

  • Karyn Hricik has written: 03/29/2015 at 2:28 pm Reply

Would you please put the number of stitches at the end of each increase row. It would really help. Also, I ssume you don't turn at the end of each row on the hat because you don't say to. Just keep going in the same direction? Thanks. Karyn

For the 3-10 year size, row 4 and row5 are both done in pink! Is this correct????

  • Unknown has written: 10/13/2015 at 10:14 pm Reply

If I want this to fit a 6 month old should i just use a smaller hook?

  • Nancy Stanelle has written: 10/19/2015 at 1:39 pm Reply

    Hi Chris,
In round 3 you indicate that we should have 34 dc. Could you check that again? I'm not coming up with that after 22 dc from the previous round 2.

  • Paula has written: 10/22/2015 at 3:47 am Reply

I love this hat and have seen it made by others as well and it was still adorable. My comment is that I wish you would change your blog template. The dark blue on the side makes it almost impossible to read the pattern. I've checked my settings etc and I don't think it's a problem on my side, such as the text should all be in the light blue.. if it is, I'm not sure how to make that happen 🙂

  • Paula has written: 10/22/2015 at 3:49 am Reply

Now that I submitted my comment I was taken to another page with a different background and the text IS all in the white.. sooo not sure what happened the first time but you can forget I was ever here 🙂

  • Unknown has written: 12/10/2015 at 10:20 pm Reply

Hi Nancy, Just wondering how many you came up with. I came up with 32 dc not including the chain.

  • Eric Ortiz has written: 06/07/2016 at 10:10 am Reply

The pattern seems to be easy but when I tried to crochet, I felt difficulty and finally made a wrong one. Your hat is looking awesome this time. And I want to know that how you can you make it such beautiful. No matter I will learn from your site furthermore till I get like this. My kids like this hats very much. But most of time I buy it from the market but now I want to make this on my own. Mostly I can't judge which color will be most suitable in which area?

Can you clarify where to put the second earflap? If I'm folding the earflap in half, I can't figure out where the fold is that I'm supposed to count from.

Did you have a pattern for an adult cap?
Also any suggestions for yarn as lion brand vanna's choice has been discontinued?

  • Biker Babe has written: 11/05/2016 at 12:52 pm Reply

LOVE this pattern. But like others, I'm getting a much smaller hat (I tend to crochet tightly). Made the 1-3 yo for 15 mo granddaughter & it barely fits so started on the 3-10 yo. Keeping my fingers crossed that it's not too big! Thanks for your lovely pattern! AND ITS FREE!!!!!!!

  • Chelonia has written: 01/03/2017 at 3:53 pm Reply

Thank you for all of the time and effort you put into this pattern, and for the gracious way that you have listened, helped, and made changes as needed. Really appreciate your gift of a free pattern for such a cute hat. Happy 2017!

After doing round 2 with 22 dc, I have ripped round 3 out four times now thinking I am doing something wrong. I am only coming to 30 dc. Not able to come up with 34 as in your pattern. I do not want to improvise and make it fit. Please review your pattern.
