Skill Level:  Easy

Size:
0 – 3 months, 3 – 6 months

Materials Needed:

–  1 skein Medium Worsted weight (#4) yarn (Oxford Grey – Color A) (I used “Lion Brand Wool-Ease” for this hat.)  Used for hat and ears.
–  Small amount of Medium Worsted weight  (#4) yarn (Red – Color B) for stripe (Mr. Mouse) and bow (Missy Mouse)  (I used “Lion Brand Wool-Ease.”)
–  Crochet Hook,  Size G/4.00 mm
–  Yarn Needle  (Used for attaching ears, bow and working in loose yarn ends.)

Gauge:  12 dc sts = 4 inches
(I crochet pretty loosely.  If you crochet tighter, you may want to
adjust to smaller hooks to get your desired size.)

Hat Pattern

Size:  0 – 3 months

Round 1:  (With Color A – Oxford Grey)  Using the “Magic Circle”, Ch 1.  Work 12 dc in the circle.  Join with slip stitch to top of first dc.   (12 dc)  **I’ve found it important to join to the top of the dc rather than to the top of the chain.  By doing this, you really reduce the visibility of the seam on the finished hat. **

(Also, from now on, the Ch 2 at the beginning of the round counts as the first dc.)

Round 2:  Ch 2.  Work 1 dc in same stitch as Ch 2.  Then work 2 dc in each stitch around.  Join to first dc with slip stitch.
(24 dc)

Round 3:  Ch 2.  Work 1 dc in same stitch as Ch 2.  Work 1 dc in next stitch.  *Work 2 dc in next stitch.  Work 1 dc in next stitch.*  Repeat from * to * around.  Join to first dc with slip stitch.  (36 dc)

Round 4:  Ch 2.  Work 1 dc in same stitch as Ch 2.  *Work 1 dc in next 8 stitches.  Work 2 dc in next stitch.*  Repeat from * to * around to the last 8 stitches.  Work 1 dc in each of the last 8 st.  Join to first dc with slip stitch.   (40 dc)

Round 5:  Ch 2.   (From now on DO NOT work the first stitch in the same stitch as the Ch 2.). Work 1 dc in each stitch around.  Join to first dc with slip stitch.

Fasten off leaving about 15 inches of yarn (this will be used to sew the ear to the hat. Weave in loose end in center back of ear.

Attaching Ears to Hat

Left Ear:
Using the photograph for ear placement, sew both ears to the hat.
To attach, flatten the hat with the front facing you.  (The seam will be going right down the center of the back of the hat.)  Using the yarn needle and the yarn you left after making the ear, attach the left ear right at the fold, beginning at the bottom of Row 2 and continuing down to the bottom of Row 5.  First stitch through the inside of the ear and through the hat right along the bottom of the sc row.  When finished with that, turn the hat and blind stitch all the way along the back of the ear all the way back to the top.  This will help the ear stand up straighter by itself.  Fasten off securely and weave in loose ends of  yarn.

Right Ear:
Repeat as for the left ear!

Bow:  (For Missy Mouse Hat)

Ch 12.
Row 1:  Sc in 2nd stitch from the hook.  Sc in each ch across.  Ch 1.  Turn.

Row 2:  Sc in each stitch across.  Ch 1.  Turn.

Row 3:  Sc in each stitch across.  Ch 1.

Edging:  Slip stitch in each stitch on all four sides of the rectange.  Slip stitch into first stich of the edging.  Fasten off leaving about 18 inches of yarn.  This will be used to form the bow shape and to sew the bow to the Missy Mouse Hat.

Attaching Bow to Hat:  (Missy Mouse Hat)

Using a yarn needle, weave the yarn from the edge of the bow to the center.  This will go horizontally from the side to the center.  Make a stitch through the bow right through the center to anchor the yarn there.  Now weave the yarn from the center to the top of the bow and then back down from the center to the bottom of the bow.  Weave from bottom to top and then back to the bottom.  Now pull the yarn so that it gathers the bow (rectangle in the center, forming the bow shape).  Now wrap the center 3 or 4 times with the yarn and make a stitch on the back of the bow to anchor it so that it doesn’t move or unravel.  After attaching both mouse ears to the hat,  attach finished bow to the hat.  (Refer to photo for placement.)
Weave in any loose ends.

This is such a cute hat!  Enjoy!
